Stir up Sunday

The Sunday preceding the start of Advent
is known as Stir Up Sunday, and is the day traditionally associated
with the making of Christmas cakes and puddings.

Stir up Sunday

For some years we have held a special and informal service
during which the congregation join in the mixing of Christmas cakes for the parish.
Large cakes are set aside for the Crib Services on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.
The remainder (about 100) are distributed to parishioners who have been nominated to receive them.

The name comes from the opening words of the Collect (Special prayer for the day):-

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
